How to Teach Philosophy Thought Experiments in High School

Fast answer: teach a thought experiment as a tool for testing a concept or assumption—not as automatic proof that the imagined conclusion is true in the real world. Students should be able to say what the hypothetical helps reveal, which assumption it pressures, and what evidence would still be needed for a stronger empirical claim.
This distinction is especially useful in high-school philosophy because vivid hypotheticals are memorable. That is also the risk: students can confuse “I can imagine this” with “this establishes how the world works.”
A five-step routine for any thought experiment

Teach the distinction before asking for an opinion
A thought experiment can be useful for:
- revealing a hidden assumption;
- testing whether a definition is too broad or too narrow;
- producing a counterexample;
- comparing competing principles;
- showing that two ideas students were treating as identical can come apart;
- generating a new question that later requires observation, measurement, or research.
It should not automatically be treated as:
- direct empirical evidence;
- a measurement of how people actually behave;
- proof that an imagined technology is feasible;
- proof that a philosophical intuition is universally shared;
- proof that a metaphor or analogy maps perfectly onto the real world.
Use changed-cue cases to test whether students understand the reasoning
After students respond to a thought experiment, change one meaningful feature. If their answer changes, ask why. If it does not change, ask which principle remained stable.
Examples of useful changes:
- Identity: the original person survives instead of being destroyed; does a digital copy become the same person?
- Ethics: the number of people affected changes, but the action still violates a rule; which criterion now matters more?
- Knowledge: the observer receives one new piece of direct evidence; how much should confidence change?
- Probability: the possible harm stays severe but becomes much less likely; does the recommended action change?
This is a better assessment than asking students to repeat the conclusion of the original video. It checks whether they can transfer the distinction to a new case.

Connect thought experiments to argument skills
The American Philosophical Association emphasizes that philosophical education should cultivate analytical, critical, interpretive, and evaluative abilities, not just deliver historical information or a set of correct philosophical answers. A simple written frame is:
The case suggests ___ because ___. The key assumption is ___. If ___ changed, I would/would not change my conclusion because ___. The case does not by itself establish ___.
That final sentence is important. It turns a vivid hypothetical into disciplined reasoning.

A strong thought-experiment lesson should leave students with more than an opinion about the imaginary case. Students should be able to identify the concept under pressure, explain why the case matters, test the idea under changed conditions, and say exactly where conceptual reasoning ends and new evidence would be required.
