How to Teach Philosophy in High School: An 11-Week Crash Course Sequence

Short answer: a strong high school philosophy course should teach students how to reconstruct an argument before criticizing it, distinguish a conclusion from the reasons offered for it, test those reasons with counterexamples and changed cases, and compare frameworks without treating disputed philosophical positions as settled facts.

Four units make the sequence easier to teach

  • Unit 1 — Reasoning, Reality, Knowledge & God (#01–12): establish the vocabulary of arguments, evidence, skepticism, knowledge, science, and philosophy of religion.
  • Unit 2 — Belief, Existence, Identity & Agency (#13–25): move from the problem of evil and epistemic responsibility into death, identity, personhood, mind, AI, and free will.
  • Unit 3 — Language, Aesthetics & Moral Foundations (#26–34): examine how meaning works, how speech can act in the world, what we mean by art, and where moral claims might get their authority.
  • Unit 4 — Ethical Theory, Justice & the Good Life (#35–46): compare ethical frameworks and then apply them to responsibility, justice, discrimination, animals, family, poverty, life-and-death questions, and competing accounts of a good life.

Use one reasoning routine across the entire course

Students do not need a different worksheet strategy for every philosopher. A more durable routine is:

  1. Reconstruct: What is the claim? What reasons or premises support it?
  2. Locate the hinge: Which premise, definition, or criterion is doing the most work?
  3. Test: What counterexample, objection, or changed fact would weaken the inference?
  4. Compare: How would another philosophical framework analyze the same case?
  5. Limit the conclusion: What does the argument establish, and what would be an overclaim?

This matters because philosophy is not best taught as a list of “right answers.” The American Philosophical Association describes philosophical education as developing analytical, critical, interpretive, and evaluative abilities in addition to learning philosophical content and methods. Make controversial episodes analytically demanding without prescribing a viewpoint

Several episodes address religion, conspiracy beliefs, discrimination, animals, poverty, assisted death, and other disputed questions. The safest and most intellectually serious approach is to keep claims attributed:

  • “Aquinas argues…” rather than “This proves…”
  • “A utilitarian would evaluate…” rather than “The morally correct answer is…”
  • “The episode presents this objection…” rather than converting a source-era example into a current factual claim.

Students can still be assessed rigorously. Ask whether they can reconstruct the reasoning, identify an assumption, explain a counterargument, or apply the same criterion to a changed case. Neutrality does not require vague opinion prompts.

Assessment should test transfer, not transcript recall

A practical assessment architecture for this sequence is a short bank after each instructional week, a broader bank after each unit, and a cumulative final in Week 11. Keep those layers distinct. A weekly item can ask students to identify the logic of a specific argument; a unit item should ask them to compare or transfer criteria across several episodes; the cumulative final should use new cases that require students to choose and defend the relevant philosophical tool.

The Common Core high-school literacy standards are a natural secondary alignment for this work. The argument-writing standards require students to distinguish claims from counterclaims, organize reasons and evidence, and develop competing claims fairly while attending to strengths and limitations. A research guardrail: do not oversell philosophy

There are good reasons to value philosophical reasoning, but avoid claiming that taking a philosophy course automatically makes students smarter. A 2024 study in the Journal of the American Philosophical Association found differences between philosophers and other groups on several thinking measures while explicitly noting that the evidence did not establish that studying philosophy caused those differences. That is a useful model for classroom claims: value the reasoning practice without promising a causal effect the evidence does not support. Read the study abstract.

Research on Philosophy for Children also shows why implementation matters. A 2024 review/modeling paper synthesized seven systematic reviews/meta-analyses and 83 empirical studies to examine variables involved in Philosophy for Children outcomes. That evidence is relevant to the broader idea of structured philosophical inquiry, but it should not be treated as direct proof of outcomes for a particular high-school video curriculum. That gives an 11-week course coherence, keeps controversial topics academically neutral, and creates a clear progression from introductory argument skills to independent philosophical analysis.
