Google Forms Self-Graded Quiz Troubleshooting & Setting
Why can't I see my students' names or email addresses in the Responses tab? Google Forms collects responses anonymously by default, so no identifying info like names or emails appears unless you enable collection. This is common for quizzes shared via links without specific settings.
How do I enable email collection in my current quiz? Open the form in edit mode, click the Settings gear. Under "Responses," select "Collect email addresses" and choose "Responder input" (students manually enter their email, no sign-in required). Save and test a submission—emails will show in the Responses tab (Individual view).
What's the difference between "Responder input" and "Verified" for email collection? "Responder input" adds a required field for manual email entry (works without Google accounts). "Verified" requires students to sign in with a Google account to auto-capture verified emails (ideal for schools with Google Workspace, but excludes non-Google users).
How do I set email collection as default for future forms? In Settings, go to "Defaults" > "Form defaults." Check "Collect email addresses by default" and select "Responder input" or "Verified." This applies to new forms only—not existing ones.
Should I also add a name field? Yes, for full identification. Add a "Short answer" question at the top titled "Your Full Name" and make it required. This ensures names appear alongside responses.
What if I already have anonymous responses? Changes aren't retroactive—ask students to resubmit using the updated form. Export old responses to Google Sheets for manual matching if needed.
How do I view responses with identifiers? In the Responses tab, switch to "Individual" to see per-submission details, including collected emails/names. Link to Sheets for easier analysis.
