Glacier National Park Virtual Field Trip Activities for Grades 6-12

A Glacier National Park virtual field trip can do much more than give students a scenic look at mountains and lakes. For middle and high school classrooms, the park brings glacial geology, drainage systems, engineering, wildfire, climate evidence, tourism history, and Indigenous history into one connected landscape.
That range is one reason Glacier works especially well for place-based science and geography. The National Park Service itself offers Glacier education resources across geology, climate, and distance learning, including a grades 6-8 program about shrinking glaciers. A classroom virtual field trip can extend that idea by asking students to move from one exact place to another and explain what the landscape reveals.
Start with landforms students can actually see
At Lake McDonald, students begin with a broad mountain valley occupied by a lake nearly 500 feet deep. The important idea is scale: enormous Pleistocene valley glaciers widened and deepened an older valley, while the colorful shoreline rocks are far older than the ice that later moved them. At Many Glacier, the scale changes. Students examine high mountain cirques and learn how a tarn can remain after alpine ice retreats.
Using both stops prevents 'glacier' from becoming one vague vocabulary word. Students compare valley-scale glaciation with smaller alpine basins and connect each process to a different visible landform.
Use the Continental Divide to connect water, climate, and ecology
At Logan Pass, the Continental Divide is more than a line on a map. Water falling on opposite sides can enter different continental drainage systems, while elevation, snow cover, wind, and a short growing season help explain the open subalpine and alpine vegetation. A regional map makes the drainage pattern visible at a scale the panorama alone cannot show.
St. Mary Lake then adds the generally drier and windier east side of the park. Students connect those conditions to vegetation and fire behavior, then compare a 2015 Reynolds Creek Fire image showing blackened trunks with new ground vegetation. The point is not that fire simply 'destroys' an ecosystem, but that disturbance can be followed by uneven regeneration.
Add engineering and historical access
Going-to-the-Sun Road makes engineering constraints concrete. At Big Bend, students can see the narrow roadbed, steep drop, stone edge, and gradual alignment. Historic construction photographs reveal work hidden beneath the finished pavement: excavation, retaining structures, heavy machinery, drainage, and the difficulty of building on precipitous slopes.
Many Glacier Hotel adds a different access story. The Great Northern Railway promoted Glacier as a destination and built lodging to bring visitors into remote mountain basins. Students can discuss how transportation and tourism changed access without treating twentieth-century tourism as the beginning of human history in the region.
Finish with evidence students can compare
At Grinnell Glacier, matched 2016 and 2025 photographs demonstrate why repeat photography is stronger than comparing random vacation snapshots. Students consider camera position and late-summer timing, then connect visual comparison with mapped glacier margins from aerial and satellite imagery.
At Two Medicine, the tour closes with Blackfeet history and continuing presence. Students place the 1895 agreement, 1896 congressional ratification, and 1910 creation of Glacier National Park in order, making clear that park status did not begin the human history of this landscape.
A classroom structure that stays manageable
